BCC International No. 5 - October 1980

As we continue to grow so we need to bring people of diverse experience into our organisation.

It has also been decided to establish a planning division within CSO to institutionalise management and evolve our corporate medium and long-term goals.

In May (1980), BCC formally opened a new branch in Lome, capital of the West African Republic of Togo, as part of its current policy of expansion in that part of the world. Togo is a small but prosperous country wedged in between Ghana to the west and Benin to the east.

BCC came into operation in Bangladesh at the end of 1976, when it opened its first branch in the major port city of Chittagong. Its main branch in Dacca, the capital city, followed in December the same year.

BCC has opened its first branch in Latin America and has at the same time established a Latin American Regional Office. The country we have chosen as our base is Panama, which, since the days of the conquistadors, has played a crucial role in encouraging the creation and transportation of wealth. The result has been a huge growth in the number of banks operating in Panama - there are now over 100 major banks registered there and assets have grown from $1.9 billion in 1972 to over £10 billion in 1978.
