The Visionary and the Vault

A Forthcoming Book - a biography of Agha Hasan Abedi

Agha Hasan Abedi founded BCCI in Luxembourg in 1972 with an ambition that went well beyond conventional banking: to build an international institution run substantially by, and for, bankers and businesses from Asia, the Middle East and Africa, at a time when the developing world had little genuine access to global finance on its own terms. The Visionary and the Vault is his story - as a banker, but also as the social entrepreneur, motivator of people and philanthropist that those who worked alongside him remember him as.

The book follows Abedi's path from Pakistan to the founding of BCCI, through the Bank's rapid international growth, its founding of the Third World Foundation and Global 2000, and its philanthropic work in health, education and agriculture across the developing world - commitments Abedi pursued alongside, not instead of, his banking career. It also follows a less-examined thread: Abedi's ambitions in the United States, and BCCI's indirect stake, through Gulf Arab shareholders, in First American Bankshares - a connection that would later draw intense scrutiny, and one this book traces back to Abedi's own account of what he was trying to build.

Allegations of wrongdoing linked to BCCI in its final years were not, on the available record, linked to Abedi's personal enrichment. This book does not set those allegations aside, but it insists they be weighed against the fuller picture of a man whose vision shaped a bank, a foundation, and a generation of bankers from the Global South.
