1982 began auspiciously with the emergence of our Major Purpose, which now provides a moral framework for all that we do. Balancing our growing awareness of the non-material side of life, last year also saw significant advances in the material growth of our bank.
Our global network embraces fifty nine countries and among the new countries to host a BCC presence are two that will play a vital role in our future development. The agency in Miami, opened in 1982, is paving the way for a very strong financial operation in the Americas. In the People's Republic of China the opening of a representative office in Beijing is a remarkable event with which to close the tenth year of our history, and we devote a large part of this issue of The BCC International to recording that historic occasion.
We also continue our analysis of the technology of the invisible with a look at the role of the individual and how he or she can change the environment for the better.
The cover of this first issue in 1983 is white, a symbol of the increasing clarity and unity of the vision now apparent throughout BCC. As we enter our second decade, the clarity of our vision and the strength of our faith are our best guarantees of continuing success.
