
AROUND THE BCC WORLD
Here is a first glimpse of some images from the world of BCC from photographs of employees (members of the BCC family), people, events, and memorable moments in BCC's history published in the bank's in-house magazine, BCC International. The selection includes photographs contributed by BCC employees and their families and those obtained from other sources. Some are duplicated in other section pages where photographs are immediately associated with specific subject matters.

Sudan: Officers of BCCI branches in Sudan who attended the first seminar on credit analysis techniques to be held in Sudan. The seminar was organised by the BCC regional Training and Development Centre based in Cairo, Egypt and was part of a drive to ensure professional excellence in all aspects of the bank's activities. Pakistan: Members of the Tenth Batch at BCC Karachi Training Academy, with the BCC President Mr Agha Hassn Abedi (Centre) and BCC executives.




United Kingdom: Giving in the United Kingdom. BCC helped to organise a party for Lord Taverner's charity at the Hilton Hotel in London. The Lord's Taverners is the UK's leading youth cricket and disability sports charity. H.R.H. Prince Philip, husband of the Queen of the United Kingdom, is closely involved with the charity, which raises money for disabled children. In the photograph: H.H. Prince Philip with Mr M. M. Bangladesh: Giving in Bangladesh 1984. Mr M.A. Rashid, general manager, BCC Bangladesh (L), who handed over a cheque to Lt.-Gen. H.M. Ershad, President of Bangladesh (F), as BCC's contribution to the Bangladesh Flood Relief Fund. Behind Mr Rashid is Mr Askari H Khan, personal assistant in London to BCC President.

USA: Members of BCC’s family at opening of BCC’s new representative office in Houston, Texas on 10 July 1984, as part of its growing presence in the USA. The opening ceremony was attended by the Honourable Louie Welch, president of the Houston Chamber of Commerce and mayor of the city of Houston, together with distinguished bankers, heads of corporations, and individuals of high net worth. In all, more than 200 guests were present.

United Kingdom: School leavers of the BCC’s 1983 and 1984 groups with the tutors of BCC’s London Training Academy.

Egypt: Delegates of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Leeds UK, one of the oldest in the UK, accompanies by heads of business companies, visited Cairo to expand trading links between the two cities. BCC Misr hosted a reception on behalf of BCC's Leeds branch, and it was attended by senior officials from the British Embassy in Egypt.

United Kingdom: Lead actors of 'Aren't We All?', a comedy play, at the prestigious Theatre Royal at Haymarket, London. BCC was the first sponsor of a major theatre in London. By sponsoring the show in London's West End, BCC had private use of the Royal Box. No other bank had such facilities for entertaining clients at the time. The comedy play was a hugely successful revival of a 1920s comedy. When Mrs Margaret Thatcher, the UK Prime Minister, visited the theatre while the play was still showing, she commented that she was delighted to see BCC taking the lead in promoting London's theatre.
The world-famous cast included Rex Harrison, an established English actor who also appeared in numerous successful movies, Claudette Colbert, an American actress who acted in many plays and movies and returned to the London stage after an absence of 56 years, Francis Matthews, an English actor, and Nicola Pagett, a British actress who starred in many TV series and movies.

Brunei: The polo team sponsored by BCC to take part in a tournament at the Royal Brunei Polo Club. Col. Ibnu, ADC to His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei and general manager of the Polo Club, expressed their gratitude to BCC for sponsoring the team, and invited the team to take part in the tournament every year. Mr Dildar Rizvi, regional general manager, Far East, (centre) took the opportunity to present a BCC Challenge Cup to the club. The tournament was an expression of the warm and cordial relations that existed between BCC and the Sultanate of Brunei.

Oman: At a squash tournament in Muscat sponsored by National Bank of Oman (NBO), a subsidiary of BCCI in the BCC Group. In the finals Mr Jehangir Khan, the world number one, beat Mr Qamar Zaman, the world number two. In the picture: Jehangir thanking BCC after the match. Mr Arif Maqsood, BCCI executive deputed to NBO officiated at the prizegiving.


Mauritius: Miss Nishat Abdul Rahman of BCCI Mauritius won a prize at an inter-bank table tennis competition. In the picture is Miss Rahman receiving her prize from His Excellency Mr Prem Singh, the Indian High Commissioner in Mauritius.

Isle of Man: HRH Princess Anne (L) was guest of honour at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held on the Isle of Man. In the picture the Princess is being introduced to BCC executives visiting from London by Mr Tony Wood, BCC's Isle of Man manager. During the Princess's visit, BCC sponsored a charitable evening organised on behalf of one of her favourite charities, the Order of St John. The evening included dinner for 500 guests representing parliamentary democracies in 49 Commonwealth countries. BCC also sponsored a gala performance, with more than a thousand guests, at the Gaiety Theatre in Douglas, the island's capital. The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown dependency in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland.

South Korea: Giving in South Korea. Floods in South Korea had caused deaths and the destruction of property, BCC was moved to make a contribution to the relief fund. At a small ceremony, BCC officials presented a cheque to Her Excellency Chung-Rye Kim, Honourable Minister of Health and Social Affairs. The Minister was deeply moved by the concern shown by BCC, and said: 'It is very difficult to imagine that a commercial organisation like yours, especially a foreign bank, should donate such a large sum. God bless your bank. BCC Seoul will grow bigger and bigger together with your bank's great philosophy.'

United Arab Emirates: A delegation of the Kenya Business Community who visited BCC Emirate's head office in Abu Dhabi. Mr Zafar Iqbal, managing director and other members of the BCC family in Abu Dhabi received the delegates and discussed with them means of expanding trade between UAE and Kenya.

United Kingdom: BCC UK region annual Christmas party one of the most famous luxury hotels, Grosvenor House, commanding a notable location on Park Lane in central London and next to Hyde Park. The Grosvenor House has hosted may significant and historic events. It has long been associated with royalty, international dignitaries and celebrities as well as serving as one of London’s main social hubs.
This was the first time that the vast majority of UK region gathered under a single roof with the glittering saris, taffeta dresses and dark suits. Old friends came together, whilst the new members of BCC family were introduced. There were nearly 1,500 family members all sharing the essence of the spirit of Christmas, of growth and of a togetherness that had evolved over years of working and sharing with each other. There was a strong mixture of emotion which reflected sincere happiness, hope and a real strength - a strength on which to build an even greater future. BCC had come a long way since the time when only a handful of people constituted the UK region.

United kingdom: "When during the next few days you receive and then GIVE three per cent of your annual salary, please GIVE with it something of yourself; a part of your feelings, a part of your heart, some of your love, all of your humility and your grateful thanks. As for me, I have little to GIVE except to pray to my God to GIVE you all and the best and a touch of His silent and invisible 'GIVING'": Mr Agha Hasan Abedi, BCC President in a letter addressed from central office London to all group employees, the BCC family members.

Hong Kong: A junk boat with red sails is symbol of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. The boats date back to the Han dynasty (202BC to 220AD) although some say they first appeared in the 10th century when China began using them for trading expeditions. They were still very common on Victoria Harbour in the 1960s and 1970s.

Zambia: A view of Vitoria Falls, located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and considered to be one of the world's largest waterfalls due to its width of 1,708 m (5,604 ft). BCC (Zambia) had five branches in the country.



USA: BCC – PACE University New York: Building for the future. A venture that began in 1984 with the launch of a six-month training programme for 30 fresh graduates recruited by BCCI in USA as trainee officers. Bangladesh: Mr Agha Hasan Abedi, President of BCC, on a visit to Bangladesh in 1984, where he discussed his vision of possibilities with Lt-Gen. H.M. Ershad, President of Bangladesh.


United Kingdom: The Banker magazine of London, in its December 1984 issue, published a survey of the top 100 Arab banks. BCC was ranked as the third largest in terms of deposits and fourth largest in terms of assets, capital funds and pretax earnings. The Banker is a leading British English-language monthly international financial affairs publication owned by The Financial Times Ltd. and edited in London, United Kingdom.
