Human Resources

BCCI had a dedicated Human Resources Division, previously the Staff and Establishment Division, in the group Central Office in London United Kingdom; the central office known as the Central Support Organisation (CSO) was responsible for overseeing the management and administration of BCC's global operations.

BCCI's Human Resources Division worked closely with BCCI's Systems & Operations Division and was assisted by human resources departments at important BCCI Regional Offices.

With a rapid expansion of the Bank, there was a need for trained manpower to man the branches, and therefore the need for recruitment. The recruitment was done in two streams. Stream-1, Recruit qualified and experienced staff to man the branch operation and stream-2, to also recruit fresh young individuals with education qualifications and no or little experience in banking. Stream-2 were trained by stream-1, who had the qualification as well as the experience and acted as mentors. The young fresh management graduate trainees, were groomed in the BCCI tradition, imbued with the management philosophy of BCCI alongside the traditional and experienced bankers, as an integral part of the synergy. In order to attain these twin objectives, there was an urgent need to open training centres around the BCC world.

BCCI's approach to banking was based on humanitarian ideals of service and caring, involving both material and moral for everyone in BCCI collectively the BCCI family. This applied as much to the internal dynamics of the BCC family as to relations with clients and the world at large. In this respect BCCI Human Resources played a vital role in sharing the BCCI President's vision and aspiration with the support of the training and development centres.

The Human Resources team at BCCI were responsible, under the guidance of BCCI senior management, to develop, advise on and implement policies, relating to the effective use of the staff in the BCCI Group.

The functions of BCCI Human Resources included the following:

  • Recruitment and employment
  • Salary, benefits and allowances

Staff Benefit Trust

To motivate the employees, the BCC President established a unique Staff Benefit Trust with the intention that BCC should ultimately be owned by the employees. The employees would not be required to purchase shares in BCC.

  • Declaration of Trust for the benefit of employees of BCC Group and others on 27 January 1987
  • Draft Rules of ICIC Staff Benefits Trust 8 July 1983
  • ICIC Staff Benefit Trust: Deed of Trust made on 15 December 1982
There had not been such a vision by a bank in the world before for its employees.

The incentive for employees was the trust would provide a generous retirement benefit at the discretion of BCC, medical treatment, and financial support for the welfare of their families.

In-house magazine

BCC International, published from November 1979 to March 1990 from London UK, was BCCI's own inter-group house magazine. The idea was the initiative of Mr John Hilberry, head of communications for BCCI group and previously with the Financial Times and Bank of America London UK. It was launched as part of an overall internal communications exercise to keep BCCI staff informed with news and activities of the group banks around the world.

The BCC International chronicled the growth of BCCI group, reporting regularly on all spheres of its operations. This growth, impressive by any standards, was two-fold. On the one hand BCCI grew vertically. Vertical growth in this sense, was the development of the services and products that BCCI offered to clients. But the BCCI group also grew horizontally, by opening more and more branches around the world.

The magazine also gave insights into BCCI's identity, the President's vision, sense of possibilities and inspiration to action, and the evolving international dimension of BCCI.

On 5 July 1991 western central banks took the unilateral decision to freeze BCCI group assets and shut down its operations worldwide.
